INSTRUCTION

I bring my experiences as a concert flutist, orchestral and chamber musician to my Asheville area flute students at every lesson. I have a degree in Music Education and a K-12 teacher certification. My experience in early childhood education, as well as my experience teaching in the public and private school setting, has given me invaluable insight into the mind of the learner at all ages and stages of growth.  Being the parent of three kids, two of which are teens, has also imparted me with a precious understanding of youth and the challenging world they live in today.  Giving them music lessons can support all of their learning, which not only includes academic education, but also social and emotional development in today’s times.

philosophy

My philosophy of teaching is to instill a respect and appreciation for the instrument while creating an atmosphere that nurtures creativity, exploration, technique, and musicality.  I like to create a fun and exploratory environment while still maintaining a high level of expectation and playing. My students are expected to prepare weekly scales, etudes & exercises, solo pieces, duets and sight reading practice. For beginners, I seek to lay the foundation for healthy posture, hand position, note naming, breath control and the skills to achieving a beautiful tone. In the intermediate and advanced student, I continue to refine sound, technique, vibrato, breathing, and musicality.

experience

I began my private flute teaching studio in 1991 in Bloomfield & Montclair, New Jersey. I have taught hundreds of students, from the beginner to the college level. While pursuing my Doctoral Degree, I was the Teaching Assistant to world renowned flutist Carol Wincenc. Many of my high school students have gone on to colleges and conservatories such as Manhattan School of Music, NYU, and the Clevelend Institute of Music. Before moving to Asheville, I maintained a thriving flute studio in NJ called the Montclair Flute Studio. I was also the Adjunct Flute Teacher at the Kent Place School, a private all-girls school in NJ where I coached flute classes in Middle and Upper School, conducted group lessons in the Elementary school, taught private classes, and rehearsed multiple flute choirs.  I was also regularly presenting ‘Flute FUNdamentals;’ a workshop and flute master class at various public and private schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.  I’m currently on faculty at the Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra, coaching their Flute Choir.
